"Spool.fm Released - New Web-Based Music Player — Search And Play any Song on The Net!"

On the subject of Uncategorized

A new French startup, Spool.FM, has released a service that allows you to search for and play almost any song on the web , through an AJAX and Javascript interface.

The Good:

(1) Gives Users access to almost any song on the web thats in easy access format (the search feature is still expanding, and will likely include more music as it expands)

(2) Allows songs to be placed in playlists without registration . This basically gives end users complete control over the music they want to play and in what order, compared to ordinary net radio systems , such as Yahoo Music.

(3) Its legal for the end user to use ,no matter whether they own the music they are playing or not (See “5″)

(4) You no longer have to download music if you just want to play it on your computer or computer connected stereo system. This means that you can avoid being sued.

(5) Occupies a legal gray area by searching songs from other peoples servers and indexing them . Then , when you select a song , it plays that song from the searched server. Because people are allowed to put their songs on their personal websites, this means that it should have most songs in its indexed library without creating copyright infringements.

The Bad:

(1) Poor Sound Quality sometimes , as Spool.FM doesn’t differentiate between high quality and low quality music when it searches.

(2) Multiple versions of each song, as the site displays all results it has for that particular song.

It’ll be interesting to see how this site develops and how the music industry responds. Perhaps this will be the final blow that will render up copyright reform on the net.
I’m particularly interested in whether the music industry will come after the individual site owners who sites Spool.Fm is indexing, as it will be very difficult to sue Spool itself.

"Whos.Amung. Us Blog Tool —Check out who’s online at any given moment !"

On the subject of Uncategorized

Seems like a sweet service, which allows you to know what parts of your site are getting the most attention at any given moment without having any sort of dedicated software to do so. This is especially useful if you are on a shared web hosting account where you only have access to Awstats or Webalizer, which are usually delayed by several hours.
Also if you are hosting without your own server , this provides some idea of whats happening with your vistors ( ie . You have a Blogger or Myspace page which doesn’t offer stats software)
To install simply copy the code that shows up at the whos.amung.us homepage :

The XXXXXX area identifies your site in particular. I think this service may have potential in the future by offering more advanced features related to tracking .
Signing out,
Rishi

"Using Vmware Part 1"

On the subject of Linux

Congrats ! You’ve just installed Vmware Player for Windows …. Now What?

Well first of all you have to download and extract a Linux Vmware Configured Operating System.

You could download Fedora Core 6 or the Browser Appliance which we host now. We are trying to add as many Operating Systems as we can.
Or if you want you can use the Vmware Beta Engine which will find all the areas to download Vmware configured Linux as well as Vmware resources. Just type in an Operating System or the type of program you want and you will find download links ( “Suse” for example or “Grid Computing”).

After downloading your copy unzip it and find the configuration file.

From there you will create a standard user login.

If you are running Fedora , I recommend you go to the applications bar and click on “Add /Remove Programs”.

There are a number of excellent programs included or downloadable with Fedora, from Web Developing Programs to Games.

Install them all if you want.

To be continued…. Tommorrow

"Download Linux Software to Run on Windows"

On the subject of Linux

Here you can find Linux software on Virtual Discs for use on your Windows computer. Downloading and using these will not negatively affect the stability or security of your Windows Operating System in anyway.

Download these if you want to test out Linux but don’t want to install it.
You will need the VmWare Player to use the Following Linux Software on Windows. All usernames are notroot and passwords are ” thoughtpolice” for the following software. You will need to extract the contents to a folder and if you have installed Vmware Player, click on the configuration file (the smallest in the group usually) to run the Operating System.

Browser Appliance - Allows you to securely browse the internet without fear of Windows Viruses coming from Linux to Windows due to the closed nature of Virtual Computers. Browser Appliance uses Ubuntu 5.1 a variant of Linux.

Fedora Core 6- for VmWare. Use this if you want to test out Fedora, the star Operating System of Linux, on your Windows PC. This is the newest version but may require updates when first started.
